I manage with 2 mules. Each of my characters have 2 sets of armors that they keep in their inventory. However my main has 5 sets of armor so i keep 3 of them in one of my mules. I try not to keep alot of junk in my storage so i tend to merch lots of stuff after a few weeks.
mule#1: carries all my main character's armors and weapons for each my characters, Some runes, and 50k because I surpassed the max amount of gold that can be kept in storage
mule#2: carries all the special event headgears, items, and crafting materials

i got one account 3 mules.
one for materials since the material storage isn't enough (they should rise the cap of materials to 1000 imo)
another mule for runes/inscriptions
and another one for the weapons/armors.
i hope they will inscrease the storage for the next chapter

1 Account
12 Slots (I bought 3 extra slots)
5 PVE Characters (Ele,Mo,Wa,Ra & Nec), 6 Mules (Ele, Sin, Derv, Mes, Rit & Nec) 1 Empty.
I have 2 mules full with perfect mods for most weapons. 1 mule with collectibles from "special holiday events" & materials. 1 mule with green/gold perfect weapons (that I plan on selling but hate spamming WTS... ) & the other 2 hold different armors & weaps for my 5 characters & their different builds.

Have three accounts, two primarily PVE and one PVP. Currently the PVP account is mainly used for storage.
The main PVE account has 10 PVE characters and one non-mule PVP. This account keeps dyes in the Xunlai box and the remainder is general storage. Three of the characters have one bag reserved for group storage. One has partial material stacks, one has full material stacks (250 each) and one has collectable drops.
The secondary PVE account has six PVE and a PVP mule with one open slot at present. The Xunlai box has high-end keys and general storage. The mule primarily has items that are held for possible sale, including extra candy canes, holiday treats, weapons and weapon mods. One character does most of the buying and selling, and has one bag of items actively trying to sell. Two characters have a bag of collectable drops each and one has a bag of full material stacks.
The PVP account has two PVP mules and a PVE utility character. The PVE character was used to open the materials tab for this account. Currently he has a complete set of empty bags to help in transfer between characters. One of the mules has max weapons for infrequently used character builds and assorted max mods and inscriptions. The other has runes and insignia. The Xunlai box has a set of candy cane weapons and general storage.
Pretty much every PVE character has an ident and salvage kit. Those that farm have spare kits and an expert salvage. As materials are accumulated, they get moved over to the character with partial stacks. Once full stacks are built, these are moved to materials storage (mostly full on all three accounts for common materials) or to one of the characters that keeps full stacks (these are getting full too). Tend not to have many armor and weapon sets for each character, just enough to support different builds that they run. Often this just means having a few spare armor pieces with different runes.

Hmm, I've got 10 PvE characters and 1 PvP.
PvP character carries no items except whats used, cause that character gets deleted a lot.
PvE characters carry sup ident, and sup storage in bottom left corner of the backpack. Minipets, keys, and stuff go left of them. I carry extra armor in the first bag, and extra weapons in the second bag. Inscriptions I keep in the beginning of the first bag, though I've found them mostly useless so they're probably going to disappear soon.
Obviously festival hats go to the festival dude, and materials stay in storage material slot.
The collector items you get from quests (ie. Kournan Coins, Imperial Commendations, etc.) I keep in the front of the storage. Because I'm almost a perfectionist (I like having 250 in storage material) the material I use/collected I keep in the bottom of storage. I usually save them till i have 250, then sell for cash and restart.
I have Gwen items on my ranger (my oldest character still in existence), and festival items (ie. yuletide tonics, bean cakes, candy canes) on my necromancer. Max mods I keep on my warrior, and extra green items on my mesmer. Inventory gets rather full on them though, and it gets rather annoying at times.

I have 4 mules, carrying event items, rare weapon collection and one of a kind stuff.
My other characters have 20 slots in use for other armor, sup salvage/ID kits, other weapons (for other situations) and some headgear.
My storage is filled with dyes and the quest reward collectibles (Luxon Totems etc).
So ye... I'm kinda stuffed :P

I'm actually surprised how many people just casually rattle off that they've got mule characters. I also wonder if this is why not enough people complain about how tiny the vault is to Arenanet, and why it hasn't been increased in size yet. :P
I personally don't use any character slots as "mules" and even with a lot of sacrifice of things I'd have otherwise kept, my vault is still completely packed and I've got materials and items flooding into my main character.
The answer to how I manage my inventory, is that technically there is no managing, I simply grit my teeth as everything overflows, go back to town early because I can't carry as many things, bite down and deal with the fact that there simply is not enough space to put things I need to keep.

Since I tend to play only 1 character for any significant period of time (until I get bored and switch to the next "current" character), I just push crap I want to keep onto the characters that are in semi-retirement and make sure I keep 15 free slots on each character.
Mesmer - Christmas items (in addition to 2 extra sets of armor, 2 extra masks, and 10+ weapons)
Ranger - dyes (in addition to 1 extra set of armor and 3 extra masks, almost 10 bows)
Ele - caster weapon mods and cloth (3-4 stacks)
Para - iron (3-4 stacks), plus para weapons I plan to use but don't have the right mods for
Assassin - leather, leftover greens from a contest give-away, weapon inscriptions
Dervish - traveling light at the moment, but collecting scythes
Necro - Halloween goodies, assorted caster crap
Ritualist mule/possible real character holds all of my Cantha collector items, and my Ranger mule has a bunch of weapon mods (mostly bowstrings I haven't found bows to use them in).
Storage is a collection of "stuff to trade in to quartermasters", or free spaces to move stuff to my other characters.

Well my storage is pretty clean.
I have one mule, a character I thought I would like playing but got bored of but decided not to delete because I spent some time on it and still have two character slots open. I put stuff like CC weapons and holiday items, dyes, and runes I may possible use in the future.
When my storage gets filled up, normally I will sell everything and won't do anything until I get it all sold.
That is pretty much all I do and I normally only have one armor set per character with a bunch of different headsetts for different builds.

1) buy any storage upgrade possible(bag slots, Xulani Agents)
2) buy 2 sup. salvage kits, and 2 sup id-kits.
3) do whatever it is you do.
4) salvage crap/id crap
5) put it in storage
6) save matierals
7) repeat.
8) once you start getting 250 of materials, start selling to people, maybe the merchants. or maybe spend it on sum fancy-smancy armor
9) profit!!(repeat)

- 1 Mule for Events items
- Storage : greenies, good goldies (the others are sold to merchants or given to guildies), dyes and matérials.

I put together an excel spread sheet and have it printed out in front of me while I play. This way I reserve about 5 spaces in each inventory of each character to hold onto something specific and can pencil in whatever they have in case I need it for quick reference. I also did it for my heroes to check on their equipment and see what they need. A little easier then trying to remember what each 14 heroes on each of the 12 characters has.
I use storage just for dyes and transferring items. If that third open tab in storage becomes a dye storage it'd be beneficial for me.

Wow, I have to say that there are some very creative methods here. My philosophy is this:
2 mules
Mule 1: dyes, runes, weapon mods
Mule 2: holiday stuff
I always keep an Sup ID/Salvage in the upper left corner of the backpack. Each character carries no more than 4 weapons/shields because that is all the weapon sets available One bag holds collectible items (masks, coins, etc) and the last bag holds mats until they get to 250 (then they go to the merch or trade). Usually I only have one extra headgear so that just goes in the belt pouch.
That's how I run things, but I'm sure there is a better way

Not such a strange organisation, but strange proportions by my standards.
Likewise I carry the 4 weapons of use at any one time in the inventory, along with Superior Identification and Superior Salvage (those in lower left)... I leave my collectible items (when I'm collecting them) in the back of my Inventory... along with anything important for keeping that I'm holding onto. I sell what I don't need when I'm done getting collector weapons for heroes and the like.
But as for my two Storage Characters, I have Holiday Items, Runes and Inscriptions together in one, and Weapons, Mods and Dyes together in the second. I'm surprised that you'd have one for holiday stuff alone and be able to fit the rest in a second.... but then I suppose thats because I only have stuff from last Halloween stored away (5 slots) and tend to gather all kinds of greens + golds that I've farmed and can't be bothered to sell yet (and will never use) like my 3 spare sets of Xuekao's Daggers. I'm a hell of a pack-rat.... so I might end up making a third storage character soon. I've already paid £18 for extra slots so far.

I also have a total of 12 characters and 2 are storage and I'm getting full up on everyone. I've had to start getting rid of collector's drops and selling off more runes and other random stuff. I have a bunch of holiday junk like transmogrifer tonic and ghosts in a box that I will never use but am not sure how to sell.

I have 8 characters. 4 of them I use for storage. Three material storage characters (two of them full), and a holiday item mule. I keep a bunch of random stuff on my ranger, too, as I don't play her too much.
My two main characters only keep their kits, headpieces, equipment and the odd quest item. Everything else goes on the mules.
